I was cleaning up the kitchen, Tom was coming out of the bathroom, and Muggins was laying on their mat in the living room. Muggins caught my eye and stood up, emphatically wiggling their body back-and-forth as they moved toward the door. “Ah, I see you.” I said. They looked back at me over their shoulder as I moved closer and crouched down to see what they needed. Even more wiggly than before, Muggins came up to me with soft eyes and a quick tongue that reached up to lick under my chin like a puppy. Tom knelt down to join the fun and Muggins licked him until he giggled. Muggins fully leaned into appeasement puppy mode to ensure that we got the message, “Pretty please! Can we go on a family walk? I’ll be the best cutest sweetest puppy ever if we can all go together!” I laughed out loud, marveling at Muggins’s intentional and skilled communication, and then joined them to plead with Tom, “Can we go?” Tom and I coined the term “family walk” earlier this year, after countless experiences in which Muggins refused to go on a walk until we all went together. We learned that Muggins would rather wait hours for a walk than venture out without the entire family. Dogs truly understand the importance of relationships and they create opportunities for us to connect, not just with them, but also with each other. From dog park playdates to animal assisted therapy, this “social facilitator” quality of dogs perseverates throughout and enriches our lives in the most wonderful ways!
