Dear collaborator,

I know that you’re longing for ease in your relationship with your dog. You just want them to listen to you, to stop barking when you ask, to come when you call, to trust your guidance. Amidst all the complexity and chaos currently permeating our world, being with your dog should be easy. With so many sources of stress, from work deadlines and bill due dates to catastrophic levels of local houselessness and unimaginable loss across the globe, your relationship with your dog should not add weight to the top of the pile.

But sometimes our dog’s behaviors do inflame our most raw parts, overwhelm our tender senses, and land like final straws breaking our overburdened backs.

How can we meet our dog’s needs when there are so many other things demanding our attention? Is there a way to bring ease into our relationships with dogs that supports rather than challenges our own wellbeing? I believe there is.

We must find ways to care for ourselves that are accessible, routine, and generative. We must pace ourselves, tend to our hearts, and establish a foundational refuge within our homes so that we can persist forward in demanding justice and building the world of our dreams. And, we need a way to do this that doesn’t add another task to our ever growing “to do” lists.

Because our dog’s needs never conflict with our own, caring for them and caring for ourselves can sometimes be accomplished in the same action.

Besides, who is better to support our daily care than a being who loves routine? Who is safer to connect with in vulnerability than the ones who persistently see the best in us? Who will gladly give back ten-fold to even the smallest act of love?

Your dog, that’s who.

BREATHE WITH YOUR DOG

a co-regulation practice to support you in pacing yourself, tending to your heart, establishing refuge AND finding ease with your dog

You’ll need some low-value treats or kibble plus a mat, towel, or dog bed.

  1. Set up your space, ensuring comfort for both you and your dog.

  2. Invite your dog to join you and start taking some deep slow breaths.

  3. Give your dog 1 treat for any of the following: sitting near you, laying down, inhaling (nostrils flare), exhaling (deep sigh), head down, hips sideways, yawning, blinking.

Practice once daily for as little as 2 minutes, or as long as you like.

I recommended this practice to my good friend the other day, and this is what she said after one 5-minute breathing session:

“That was the first time in weeks that Sadie went an hour without crying!”

REDIRECTING RESOURCES

If you’re looking for concrete ways to support Indigenous leadership, bolster humanitarian aid, or redirect resources during the global strike, here are some options:

Sulala Animal Rescue

Sulala is the only organization on the Gaza strip that rescues stray animals. Their mission is to provide food and medical care to stray animals while also raising awareness of animal welfare in the community.

During the war they’ve been supporting displaced humans and animals with food and care. Food is running out and they are in desperate need of funds to continue!

 HELP ANIMALS IN GAZA

Ludar Animal Behavior & Consulting

Ludar Animal Behavior & Consulting is an Indigenous-led organization that supports local communities in the US with a mutual aid fund. This fund redistributes resources to support housing, pet care, childcare, medical bills, and education for marginalized, disadvantaged, or disenfranchised pet guardians and professionals without taking money out of donations to pay overhead costs.
