A core feature of my neurodivergence is that I am easily overwhelmed, especially when there is a lot going on around me. When there are a lot of people around me AND Muggins is having a big reaction of excitement or fear, my nervous system quickly shifts into an immobilized state, which means the parts of my nervous system that help me focus, process information, problem solve, and communicate are not “turned on”. This makes it really hard (and sometimes impossible) to answer questions from others or give guidance to Muggins. Simple interactions that start with “Is your dog friendly?” would result in a blank stare, Muggins lunging and barking, feelings of failure, and no social connection.

Over the past many years I have been building skills to help myself - skills like being aware of what’s happening inside my body, communicating my needs to others, and recognizing what both Muggins and I need to successfully navigate these encounters. I had a lightbulb moment this past year when realizing that I have more options than just “yes” or “no”! I can say, “yes, if…” or “no, but…” and add conditions, such as tools, boundaries, or requests that help me and Muggins enter into social situations in ways that feel safe, in which Muggins behaves calmly, and where we all find nourishing social connection.

This realization has been so profound, that I couldn’t help but share it with you - so here it is: my Sensory Safety Planning process, to help you and your dog find safety and clarity in knowing what you need so that you can say, “yes, if…” too!
