Co-Regulation & Dog Bites

The experience of a dog bite is traumatic, for everyone involved. The being who was bitten is experiencing the immediate aftermath of an intense physical and emotional wound; the dog is feeling extremely scared and is at risk for losing their life or their home; and the human guardian is likely experiencing a multitude of overwhelming feelings, including fear, shock, and shame. Each of these beings has been violently pulled out of their rhythm and each is trying desperately to make sense of what happened. A co-regulation approach can support all beings involved to understand what happened, sort out the feelings, establish safety, and repair relationships.

Co-Regulation: Recognizing & Caring for Trauma in Ourselves and Others

The Co-Sheltering Collaborative is a project of My Dog is My Home, a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support to organizations that provide services to unhoused humans and their companion animals. I am so excited to facilitate a workshop at their upcoming conference on March 21, 2022! Co-Regulation can support co-sheltering practices by providing a strategy to be present with other beings who are experiencing trauma, naming what is happening, recognizing and meeting needs, and taking action to establish a sense of safety.
